The Kitchen Redo - Making Progress!

So I haven't updated on the progress in the kitchen in a while...mainly because we were redoing the kitchen! :-)
Oh - and the holidays happened in the middle of all of that.

These are pictures from the first set of cabinet doors being done and hung back up in the kitchen. We started with the top cabinets because, well, we have a 2 year old and a 1 year old. We knew that the cabinets would not have doors for a few weekends because the process takes a while. Obviously we have yet to do the actual cabinets so what you are seeing here are the cabinet doors finished put back on the cabinets that have yet to be refinished. A very interesting look indeed.

 The right upper cabinets.

The left upper cabinets.

We also bit the bullet and pulled all of the cabinet doors and drawer faces off of the bottom cabinets. Originally I thought, once we got to this point, I was going to pack everything in boxes so I wouldn't have to worry about the girls getting into everything. I ended up only doing that for the plastics (which they LOVE to play with and while I don't mind, they make a huge mess) and the cleaning stuff I keep under the sink. I have to say, overall, they have done an amazing job learning to keep their hands off of the stuff.

The left side without cabinet doors and drawer faces.
I especially love the Sonic tea on the counter. Some things never change and having a Sonic tea is definitely one way that I am making it through this renovation with my sanity, mostly, intact!

The right side - notice the plastic missing from the two cabinets, though I was brave enough to leave all of the glass bowls! Go figure!

As Aaron was working, he did something to the kitchen sink facet. It began to leak and was beyond repair. We had planned to replace the facet eventually, but hadn't really planned to do it at this point. However, our old facet became unusable and so off to Lowe's I went. By myself. Without anyone else. I can't tell you how much fun that trip was - buying a new facet all by myself!

Here is Aaron replacing the facet. Yes - there are dirty dishes in the sink. What can I say? We didn't have a facet! :-)

Here is the new beautiful facet! Let me just say - I LOVE IT! Yep - that was all caps folks. That is how much I love this new facet. It is one of those that has the pull down sprayer. How did I live my life before I had a pull down sprayer on my facet? I will never go back.

Now for more decisions. We were getting to the point where we needed to decide on our countertop and get that ordered. I wanted that done and in before the holidays. To make a decision on what countertop we wanted, we also had to decide on the tile backsplash we wanted to use. Just in case you are wondering, there are a lot of countertop options and lots of different colors. At first, it was very overwhelming, but we decided on our backsplash first and that helped narrow the color choice down. Then we decided, based on price and ease of care, to go with solid surface further narrowing down our options.
This is part of our backsplash. We will use this mainly behind the sink and stove. It is flat and easy to clean which is important to me. What we currently have is a small backsplash from the countertop and then painted wall. That wouldn't be so bad except that it is flat paint. Flat paint people!! Do you know how difficult it is to clean flat paint walls? No? Let me just tell you - it. is. impossible! Impossible I tell ya!

We will be using this most everywhere else. It is really hard to see in this picture (I am not a photographer nor do I have an amazing camera...lol), but it is grey stone. I love it and a plus is that it doesn't have to have any grout! Aaron really liked that part.

 Options for countertop.

More options for countertop.

Even more countertop options. Can you tell why we were a little overwhelmed?

We decided on a Corian solid surface option in "Doeskin". Again, really hard to tell in this picture (not a photographer and no fancy camera), but it kind of has a grey overtone to it and matches the tile backsplash perfectly! We had originally put this one aside as an option that was too dark, but after realizing (thanks, Mom!) that it matched part of the tile in the backsplash perfectly, it was a no brainer!

Here is a picture of the backsplash with the countertop option and, what I had originally thought I was going to paint the walls. I have since changed my mind on the wall color, but that story will come in another post.

We are making progress! I'm not sure I'm going to survive this and while I wish we had decided to do this another time, I am loving how the kitchen is looking.

Stay tuned! Coming up - staining the cabinets (wow! That was an ordeal!), getting the new countertops (they are gorgeous!), and new lighting (it really pays to have a step-father-in-law that is an electrician!).
